WYA PLAN FOR 2010 ANNOUNCED
A packed schedule of activities for WYA's 25th anniversary year has been announced.

January
Birthday launch – Celebratory Night. 1st Jan – The Forum
This night includes the official launch of the WYA Birthday Booklet.

Workshops begin. New workshop programme starts on week beginning Monday 11th Jan, (Drama, Dance, Film, Visual Art and Creative Writing)

Arts Day in local Secondary Schools. Throughout 2010 WYA will help to run an arts day in local secondary schools where students will get the chance to take part in drama, dance, film and creative writing workshops.

Dance – Taster Workshops. Trish is planning a number of taster workshops in primary schools during January and February.

February
A night in tribute to Jim Daly, celebrating the life and artistic contribution of Jim Daly, Feb. 19th, The Forum, Song and Words, local musicians will play Jim's favourite music with words from his favourite authors. Adm. €10

March
‘Graffiti’ a new theatre in education play will tour local secondary schools from Monday March 8th.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade. WYA combine all workshops to bring the 25th birthday to the streets.

Reading by Creative Writing students as part of Sean Dunne Literary Festival, Sat. 20th March, Greyfriars Gallery.

Second Workshop programme starts on week beginning Monday 22nd March (Drama, Dance, Film and Visual Art).

April
New Writing launched. In April we will end our creative writing course for teenagers with a publication of new work on the WYA website.

Film Dance. In early April (Easter) Trish is planning a film dance project which will involve dancers from 12 years upwards working with Ken Coleman (film worker) to create a dance film. They plan to use an original soundtrack from a local musician / composer.

May
World Dance Fusion. WYDmoves will have its major dance production in Garter Lane in late May (28th and 29th) this has a provisional theme of a ‘World Dance Fusion’.

June
Theatre in the Woods. WYA will stage a new work outside Waterford City and again in a local woodland. This production allows for actors and dancers from various age groups to work together on a fun project. One of the ideas we are looking at is a version of ‘The Hobbit’ story by Tolkien.

Film Summer Project. In June WYD-Eye Film Unit will begin its Film Summer Production and will take place over the summer months and see young people write and direct their own short film. This project is supported by Film Professionals from the industry.

July
‘Proms Night’. All the members of WYA will have a mad ‘Hollywood’ night downstairs at the Forum. A night of talent and fun with special comperes and prizes and we hope this will become an annual night in WYA’s Calendar (Sat. 3rd July).

Performing Arts Summer School. WYA will once again join forces with Garter Lane to have a performing arts summer school for children.

Make a movie, make a play, make a dance – in one week! Throughout the summer – for children WYA are planning to have more intensive weeks where young people will sign up for a week of a certain discipline (drama, Film, dance etc.) and they work towards a sharing at the end of the week.

WYA Summer Theatre Project will kick-off on Mon. 12th July this year, earlier than usual, as we want the show (working title ‘Consent’) to be staged as part of our August Birthday celebrations. This new play is commissioned from local writer Adam Wallace and will be directed by Jim Nolan.

WYD-Eye Dance week. Trish is planning a dance week culminating with performances over the Festival Weekend

25th Birthday Mini-Festival. Running over the weekend of August 20 /21/22 WYA will celebrate with present members and families and ex-members in various locations around Waterford the birthday of the organisation. Over twenty productions, readings, dance works, film screenings are planned under the guidance of Artistic Director Nick Kavanagh.

Family Picnic Day. Also as part of the 25th Birthday on Sunday 22nd we are provisionally planning a Family Picnic Day with a number of dance pieces presented.

'Memories' Arts Exhibition. Other events planned for the weekend include a ‘Memories’ art exhibition by ex-members and friends of WYA under the title ‘Memories’. This exhibition is curated by Linda Hatton (nee Kavanagh) and Doireann Larkin – both now based in the UK.

'Pen and Pipe'. Also, a new book of Jim Daly’s writings will be launched as part of the festival. Edited by Robert Browne, with help from Mark Roper and Jim Nolan, this book will contain extracts from plays, poetry and prose written by Jim over his lifetime.

'The Archive' An exhibition of memorabilia from the last 25 years will also take place curated by Eimear Cheasty and Kate McCarthy. This exhibition will include posters, flyers, photos etc. but also personal items held by ex-members and families of ex-members over the years.

September
Third Workshop programme starts on week beginning 13th September (Drama, Dance, Film and Visual Art).

October
Diversions 2010. Seven local writers will write a new work to take place in a site specific location – last year it was the courthouse and in 2008 it was set on a bus journey. This will once again be part of Imagine Arts Festival.

Citywide Youth Dance Celebration. Trish is planning to organise the dance celebration as part of Imagine 2010.

‘Scene 15’ Youth Film Festival will celebrate issue-based and fiction short films by young people.

December
Christmas in the Marketplace. WYA will for the first time in its history stage a Nativity Play. As a tribute to Ted O’Regan, we will be staging a new version of the 1950's French play ‘Christmas in the Marketplace’. Ted was always asking when we would stage this work and now finally we have decided to give it a go. The play will be seen in various churches leading to Christmas and with money raised given to charity.

Volunteers. WYA Workshops and activities are all professionally run but we are also reliant on adult volunteers for the safety and enjoyment of the programmes. So if you are over 18 years and would like to learn new skills in groupwork, youthwork, arts work, or just want to have fun then we would like to hear from you. Access. It is the policy of WYA that all activities are accessible for all young people - so if you know of any young person who has any difficulty taking part then just contact any of the tutors or staff and we will sort it out. We have a bursary scheme if the problem is financial. We also try to use wheelchair accessible premises for all activities. Also we have successfully integrated young people with Special Needs into mainstream workshops in the past.
